Welcome
The Denver Public Schools Task Force on Early Education and School Readiness will be co-chaired by Bruce Hoyt, Board member, Denver Public Schools Board of Education and Managing Director, St. Charles Capital, and Helen Thorpe, Education Activist and Freelance Journalist.
The goal of the Task Force is to recommend effective policies and partnerships that will guide DPS in its efforts to promote school readiness among all Denver children.
A tremendous amount of brain development occurs prior to the beginning of a formal K-12 education. Unfortunately, many children coming from families in poverty tend to receive a lower quantity and quality of childcare, leaving them significantly behind other children as they enter kindergarten.
As part of its core mission to reduce the gap between better and poorer performing students, DPS must help children of poverty receive the proper experiences to prepare them for school. Research tells us that the years from 0 to 4 are critical. The DPS Task Force on Early Education and School Readiness will create a vision and examine strategies by which DPS can impact the quantity and quality of early childhood education available to the children of Denver from the ages of 0 to 4.
